dfh101 Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Does anyone know how to program a 2 button remote keyfob for a sharan without going to the vw stealer. They wanted approx Quote
seatkid Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 According to Ford the procedure is as follows...... Remote Transmitter Programming (410040) Note:A maximum of four remote transmitters can be programmed to the generic electronic module (GEM). Programming must be carried out at the same time for all the remote transmitters. Note:Before attempting to enter programming mode, make sure that the vehicle battery is fully charged and that the anti-theft alarm system is not armed or triggered. Note:If the programming mode ends with no new remote transmitters programmed, remote transmitters originally programmed are retained by the GEM. Note:After the first remote transmitter has been successfully programmed all the previously stored remote transmitters will be erased. Note:The GEM will exit programming mode automatically if four remote transmitters have been programmed or if no new remote transmitter has been programmed within the 15 second programming mode. 1. Close all the vehicle doors. 2. Note: Make sure the door lock cylinder is held in the unlock position for more than 0.5 seconds. Insert the key into the driver door lock cylinder and turn the key from the rest position to the unlock position three times within five seconds. 3. The door lock light emitting diodes (LED)s will illuminate for 15 seconds during the remote transmitter programming mode, allowing the remote transmitter to be programmed. 4. Remove the key from the driver door lock cylinder and aim the remote transmitter at the interior rear view mirror. 5. Press and hold the LOCK button on the remote transmitter. 6. While holding the LOCK button down, press the UNLOCK button three times on the remote transmitter. 7. Release both buttons simultaneously. 8. Make sure the door lock LEDs flash five times, confirming that the remote transmitter has been programmed. 9. After a remote transmitter has been successfully programmed, the GEM will reset the programming mode, allowing a further 15 seconds to program the next remote transmitter. 10. To program additional remote transmitters, repeat steps 4 to 8. 11. Make sure that all the doors lock and unlock, confirming that the GEM is no longer in programming mode. 12. Test all the programmed remote transmitters, by activating and deactivating the locking and unlocking functions. Quote
seatkid Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 (edited) :o :o :o :o :o Its suddenly struck me that you could program any (non lock fitting) remote key by the procedure above!!! You just need access to the original key for the programming period! Hows that for a tip for the dishonest back street dealer!!!! :( :D   :wacko:And because the car is programmed to the key and not the other way round, one key will suffice for the crook taking any number of Shalaxies on a test drive. Then he's got a master key to open/unalarm/mobilise all those cars! :( :( :D :D  EDIT NOTE:After the first remote transmitter has been successfully programmed all the previously stored remote transmitters will be erased.... So it's not the insurmountable security issue i thought it was!! :D But I recommend all second hand buyers to reprogram their remotes to eliminate the possibility of having an extra remote code unwittingly stored Edited February 2, 2004 by seatkid Quote
dfh101 Posted February 1, 2004 Author Report Posted February 1, 2004 Thanks for your reply, just been outside and tried it, it worked with the 2 original remotes and not the new one, this just constantly flashes at stage 5/6 when the other ones didn't and it didn't flash 5 times at the end either My cars a 2001(facelifted) model sharan and the remote came from a 2001 golf, The remotes look the same but maybe they are for different vw alarm systems. A bit of a long shot but would anyone know if there are differences or is a trip to the stealer the only option now. Many thanks DFH4NP Ps when i tried to start the car with the new key, It starts for about a second then cuts off so it must check with the remote at start up that both the key and remote have been synchronised. seatkid Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 I would think you need a proper Shalaxy remote key for it to work. You could also check the remote key battery. Quote
Mussey1 Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 Does your Sharan have a seperate remote fob or is it built into the key? Is it a votex alarm that you have as opposed to simple remote locking?? Mussey1. Quote
Paul Marsland Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 I've tried to get my 2.3 Ghia 1997R Galaxy into the programming mode umpteen times over the last several days without success (ie the unlock 3x for .5 seconds inside 5 seconds). I assume that the door lock LED referred to is the one on the drivers door that flashes when the alarm is enabled ? I've changed batteries in the remote key, and the light on the key itself flashes when you press either of the lock/unlock buttons... however I can't get the door lock LED to light up in the first place to enter the programming mode. Is there any trick to getting into the programming mode ? Or do I likely have a problem with the ECU (which incidentally I had to have replaced 3 months ago following the footwell flooding problem) ? Any suggestions gratefully received. Quote
seatkid Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 (edited) Remember the 0.5 sec is a minimum - also it means by turning the key as opposed to using the remote. Try unlocking drivers door hold the key in unlock position for one second and release, repeat twice more within the 5 second limit. The remote central locking/coding is taken care of by a multifunction electronic module known as GEM (Generic Electronics Module) which is located in the fuse box along with the level 3 fuses. After the first remote transmitter has been successfully programmed all the previously stored remote transmitters will be erased. So....don't let it go out of program mode until you've done all your remote keys Please note the security warning earlier in this thread. Edited February 2, 2004 by seatkid Quote
bigdaddy Posted September 26, 2005 Report Posted September 26, 2005 here's another one for seatkid, my GEM goes into programme mode, but it will not accept the key, (needed to reprogramme the key after battery change) any idea what it may be, I was also told the system uses a rolling code and to many presses of the key without locking/unlocking can put the key out of synch, is this true? Quote
seatkid Posted September 26, 2005 Report Posted September 26, 2005 Well in my manual, to resync a key, it says,The synchronization process must be completed within 20 seconds 1. Insert key into drivers door and turn 3 times forwards (unlock), each time holding it for 1/2 second in the unlock position. Remove Key. to check this function, the warning lamp in the door trim will flash. 2. Within 5 seconds of removing the key, point it toward interior mirror (??) and 3. Within the given period press and hold the "close" button (lock button on key) 4. Press "open" button (unlock button on key) 3 times. Release "close" button. The key has now been recoded, the warning lamp in the door trim will flash.Note: All electric windows must be closed during this procedure Quote
bigdaddy Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 Seatkid Yes same procedure as in my book, but when all done the led on the door does not flash and the key wont lock/unlock remotly, if I disconnect the battery for a few hours do you think it will reset itself and then accept the key,,,, fed up locking/unlocking manually, might just buy a replacement of ebay ,Cheers Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 if I disconnect the battery for a few hours do you think it will reset itself and then accept the key No! because what would happen each time the car battery goes flat? you would need to re-program in the keys each time it happened  Quote
bigdaddy Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 never thought of that cheers vr6, I think the key works ok (the little led on the key flashes) and the when I do the key in door turn 3 times procedure the led on the door lights for 15 secs, but it will not flash accepting the key, so is the key actually transmitting and is the led on the key only flashing because thats what its suppose to do AAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH Quote
Guest Scott Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 This sounds familiar. I had the same and last month (after two years without a working remote) ended up bringing a mobile key specialist in when my wife's non-remote key snapped. He had the computerised milling m/c for cutting the keys and made me a new one. He then used a vag to reprogramme my remote & the new key. It 'de-programmed' the car but couldn't reprogramme the it! This left the car unabe to be driven... A recovery vehicle took my Gal away to the Main Dealer where they pronounced the remote faulty & replaced it. Quote
bigdaddy Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Think I might have to go down the same rouute, and get a new remote from dealer, ebay average price about Quote
Masked Marauder Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 the led on the door lights for 15 secs, but it will not flash accepting the key, so is the key actually transmitting and is the led on the key only flashing because thats what its suppose to do The remote sends a signal to program it into the car's system, not the other way round, there is no signal sent to the remote. So the remote flashes to say it completed it's transmission but the car does not receive it so does not flash back. So the remote is not working even though the LED is flashing as it is not sending a signal that can be received by the car. This is a common fault, I have two remotes that do this. Quote
bigdaddy Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 Sorry to MM, maybe the way I wrote the post caused a little miss understanding, yes I Knew the remote key fob sends a signal the the vehicle, thanks to your post I now know the remote is broke, there is a shop near to me who repairs and replaces remotes for alarm systems, he is goimg to look at it just incase the problem is a dry solder joint, if successful I will let you know  Quote
Guest speedos Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 Hi there, I have exactly the same problem on a 99 Alhambra. When I follow the procedure, the key led flashes but the car led doesn't. Just to confirm, does this mean my key is knackered and I need to get it repaired / replaced? Or could it still be a problem with the car? Thanks for your help Jim Quote
fatblokes Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 on reading this forum i see a lot of people trying to code there keys, in august my car failed to start after getting petrol, the aa said it was down to the immobiliser. i tried all sorts of things first but in the end i took my car to a little garage and he supplied two new keys and coded them both for Quote
Guest speedos Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 I assume the issue that this guy had was related to the fact that you have to programme all the keys within the same programming session. I read somewhere that once you programme one key, all other programmed keys are cleared from the cars memory, so you need to do them all at the same time, i.e. within 15 seconds of each other... Also "fatblokes" I think your problem may have been unrelated as the remote on the key only unlocks the doors and isn't connected to the immobiliser. That is all in the transponder inside the key which does it's business when the key is in the ignition. Quote
Scope Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 I have just purchased a remote keyfob from ebay, but I need a need key blade cut.. How much are these key blades cost? And where would I get one from? Also, can any key cutting shop key these keys once I get one? Quote
Scope Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 I am about to reprogram my keys.. and it got me thinking: I've got 4 keys; 2 remote keys, 1 straight key (no remote) and the plastic emergency key.. I know how to program the remote fob, but how do I program the key with no remote? And does the emergency (plastic) key have a chip, or is it just to open the key/cut new keys? Quote
NikpV Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 If you don't have a 'RED' key (post 1997 system) depends what you mean by re-program All keys need the Pats programming but you must have 2 coded to code the other 2 Remote keys also need programming to the CL system (GEM) (all remotes must be done at the same time because of the rolling encryption) If You have the 'RED' key IIRC (Earlier system) Use red key to PATS program the non-coded ones not sure how to program IrD remotes Quote
barryorba Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 well done seatkid, tried the 410040 procedure, now have control of the thing, is there a autolock device, my doors auto lock after about 90 seconds 2002 1.9tdi regards barry Quote
joczeze Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Dear Friends Had try more that hundred times to program the PATS with my 1.9 TDI 1998 ford galaxy. I can programme the key fobs without problems, but not the immobilizer or PATS.I have the system with 1 remote key and 2 normal keys. I need to program another key (remote if possible). I had follow the intrustions in this forum, with 2 keys need. This is also reommend in Autodata and also used by Ford dealers. Does anyone had done this and was sucessefull ???? I believe this is just for Galaxy, not to Sharan or Alhambra. Thanks Quote
